Book Study Chapter 5

Welcome back for another chapter.!  We are reading Kathy Richardson's book, How Children Learn Number Concepts.

Chp 5- Understanding Place:
                         Hundreds, Tens, and Ones
"When children can think of hundreds, tens, and ones flexibly, it is not a big leap to add or subtract."
While many of the concepts in this chapter mirror those in Chapter 4, Richardson points out that working with numbers to the thousands adds another level of complexity that may be difficult for some kids. At this stage, they have to hold more and more in their head as they work with larger numbers.

Richardson mentions that learning place value takes time. I wonder how much time we typically spend on place value in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade, especially in relation to the time spent teaching multi-digit addition and subtraction.  Do you anticipate having different conversations with students and teachers on the emphasis of place value? And how would that look and sound like in the classroom?

Book Study Chapter 4

Welcome back for another chapter.  We are reading Kathy Richardson's book, How Children Learn Number Concepts.

Which brings us to Chapter 4, Understanding Place Value: Tens and Ones.  Richardson packs a lot of information into this chapter.  So much so, in fact, that it's divided into two sections:                                                  (1)  Learning the Structure of Two-Digit Numbers and (2) Learning to Add and Subtract Two-Digit Numbers.
How is understanding place value integral to the process behind multi-digit addition and subtraction?
